Science Revision Deck Flashcards
Define the term matter
Matter possesses mass and atoms. Is physical
Identify the three states of matter
Solid, Liquid, Gas
Explain the position of particles in solids, liquids and gases
Solids have a fixed position of particles, whilst gas and liquid don’t and move around.
Explain phase changes
Phase changes are when one state changes to another state. E.g. gas - solid is deposition.
Define the terms exothermic and endothermic
When energy is transferred to or from its surroundings it is an exothermic reaction, when it is taken from in from its surroundings it is an endothermic reaction.
What are the three mixtures
Suspension, colloid and solution
Define the terms: suspension, sediment, colloid, solution, emulsion, solution
Suspension - when one substance is suspended in another, generally large particles. Sediment - matter that falls to the bottom of a liquid. Colloid - particles in another substance that are too small to see. Solution - a mixture of one substance that is evenly distributed in another substance. Emulsion - two substances that are unmixable become mixable due to emulsion. An emulsifier is a mixture which makes all substances mixable.
Define the terms: solute, solvent, dilute, concentrated
Solute - a dissolved substance. Solvent - a mixture that can dissolve one or more substances into it, creating a solution. Dilute - by adding a substance like water to another substance it becomes diluted. Concentrated - a substance that is strong in measure of another component.
Identify the solute and the solvent in common solutions
Solute is the thing being mixed into another. Solvent is the mixture that’s getting another mixture. “ A thief broke into a house a filled a bag with money. The thief hid the money bag in a draw so the police wouldn’t catch him. The solute goes into the solvent.”
Concentrated vs Diluted
Recall the substances that are common solvents
Water
Distinguish between independent and dependent variables (review)
The independent variable is the thing you change. Dependent is what you measure. “I as an independent are measuring (dependent).
Recall how to Yield
Recall types of separation
Magnetic separation, mechanical separation, hand picking, sieving, filtration, distillation
Recall the changes in states of matter
Solid - Gas = sublimation, Gas - Solid = Deposition, Liquid - Gas = evaporation, Gas - Liquid = Condensation, Solid - Liquid = melting, Liquid - Solid = freezing
