Q

State what each of the following is, what instrument is used to measure it, and what units are used. Mass, weight, and volume

A

Mass: the quantity of matter in a material, triple beam balance, grams and kilograms. Weight: a body’s relative mass or the quantity of matter contained by it, spring scale, pounds and ounces. Volume: is measure of the amount of space that a substance or object takes up, cm tape, fluid ounces.

Q

Describe the following. Solid, liquid, and gas

A

Solid: definite shape, definite volume, and particles do not move from place to place. Liquid: no definite shape, definite volume, but takes on shape of its container, and particles slide by each other. Gas: no definite shape, no definite volume, but takes on shape of its container, and particles move freely.

Q

Define the following and give an example of each, mixture, solution, alloys.

A

Mixture: substances keep own properties no chemical change, when 2 or more substances are combined, granola, fruit salad. Solution: one substance dissolves into another, particles stay mixed, and evenly mixed, particles are very tiny, particles can be separated, ocean air and brass. Alloys: mixture of 2 or more metals, made by heating metals mixing together.
