science (quiz 4) nervous and endocrine system Flashcards
1
Q
what is the nervous system?
A
a organ system that coordinates the activites of muscles, monitors organs, processes data, recieved from the senses, and initiates actions. Includes the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. (basically the programing of the body)
2
Q
what are the 3 functions? Hint: S.I.M.
A
- Sensation
- Integration
- Motor output
3
Q
What does sensation do?
A
Detects change in the enviroment
4
Q
What does integration do?
A
evalutes new information and makes decisions
5
Q
what does motor output do?
A
signals a response for muscles to move or glands to secrete hormones
6
Q
how does it work?
A
- Cells that carry information through the nervous system are called neurons.
- Nerves are bundles of fibers composed of neurons that use electrical and chemical signals to transmit sensory (feeling) and motor (moving) information.
- The message that a neuron carries is called a nerve impulse.
