Science Quiz Flashcards
Physical Changes
a change in size, shape, form, or state of matter in which the matter’s identity stays the same.
Change in Shape and size
are physical changes and the identity of matter does not change
EX. you fold clothes, it looks smaller but the amount of matter doesn’t change.
Changes in State of Matter
to change the state of matter the movement of particles has to change.
Adding Thermal energy
when added to a solid the particles in the solid move faster, and the temperature increases
melting point
is the temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid
boiling point
is when liquid changes into gas and particles spread out.
Removing Thermal Energy
When thermal energy is removed from a gas, particles in that gas move more slowly and temperature decreases.
Condensation
occurs when particles are moving slowly enough for attractive forces to pull particles closer together.
EX. Small droplets of water
Dissolving
to mix evenly . The identities of the substances- water (solvent)and salt (solute) - are not changed, dissolving is a physical change
EX. powder in lemonade
Conservation of Mass
physical properties of matter change.
Particles in matter are the same both before and after physical change
Chemical Properties
a characteristic of matter that can be observed as it changes to a different type of matter
EX. piece of paper: burns with fire-smoke.
What is the ability for a substance to burn?
Chemical Property
What is the ability of a substance to rust
Chemical property
Comparing Properties
All matter can be described using chemical and physical properties.Ex. Wood physical properties: rough, rounded, heavy. Chemical properties of wood-the burning
Chemical Changes
a change in matter in which the substances make up the matter change into other substances with new physical and chemical properties.
Ex. Iron chemical change with oxygen- rust forms
