Science practice Flashcards
Colour & Lustre
How a substance reflects light
Conductivity
Whether is conducts
electricity or heat
Yes = conductor
No = insulator
Density
D= m/v
The amount of mass in a given volume of the substance. Each substance has a specific density.
Ductility
How easily a solid can be stretched into a long wire. The more it’s able to do this, the more ductile it is.
Hardness
How well a substance can resist being scratched.
Measured using
Mohs hardness scale 1 -10
Malleability
How well a substance can be pounded or rolled into a sheet shows how malleable it is.
Viscosity
How much a fluid resists flow
More resistance = more viscous
Cohesion & Adhesion
How well a substance sticks to itself and other substances
Transparency
How well light can pass through a substance
Transparent - completely see through
Translucent - partially see through
Opaque - unable to see through
Combustibility
How well a substance can react with oxygen to produce heat and light
pH
How acidic or basic is the substance using pH scale from (acidic) 0 - 14 (basic)
