Q

What is the lithosphere?

A

Crust and the uppermost part of the mantel. ITs broken up into plate tectonics

Q

What is the asthenosphere?

A

Convection happens here and this causes plate tectonics to move. The middle part of the mantle. Solid that flows like a liquid.

Q

What is the theory of plate tectonics?

A

ITs the theory of continental drift but modified. Its where the lithosphere is divided into crustal plates that move around the top of the asthenosphere.

Q

What is Sea floor spreading?

A

Sea floor spreading is the process by which new ocean crust forms at mid-ocean ridges.

13
Q

What are mid ocean ridges.

A

Ocean ridges are underwater mountain chains that form along divergent boundaries. This is where magma rises to the surface and new crust that is formed cools and hardens and eventually gets pushed away as more magma rises.

Q

WHere can you locate older crust?

further away from the mid ocean ridge.

15
Q

What is Magnetic Reversals?

A

proof that seafloor spreading occurs. Earth’s north and south magnetic poles change. This happens when the magnetic field changes. As magma rises the minerals orient themselves towards earth’s magnetic north. Same thing when magma cools. So the ocean contains alternating magnetic patterns on either side of the mid-ocean ridge.

16
Q

How does the location of volcanoes and earthquakes serve as evidence for plate tectonics?

A

because most active volcanoes are found at or near plate boundaries. The Ring of fire refers to the location of volcanoes at the edge of the pacific plate.

17
Q

What impact does plate tectonics have on society?

A

Understanding plate tectonics helps keep us safe by identifying areas of risk, helps us locate valuable minerals, and help us understand how mountains are formed.

18
Q

What is stress?

A

Stress is the amount of force that is put on a rock

19
Q

What is deformation.

A

Any change in rock shape (bending, tilting, and breaking of rock)

20
Q

What is compression?

A

folding in rock. Caused when two plates move towards each other. –> <–

21
Q

What is tension?

A

breaking in the rock. Happens when two plates move away from each other <– —>
