Science, parts of a microscope Flashcards
Eyepiece
Small piece on the top that contains the lens that you look through
Body Tube
connecting the piece between the eyepiece and the objective lens.
Arm
supports the body tube. Along with the base is one of the two points you should be holding when carrying a microscope.
Nosepiece
Contains the objective lenses and can be rotated.
Objective Lenses
the objective lens of a microscope magnifies the image. Low, Medium and High Power.
Low Power Objective Lens
used first to bring object into view.
Medium Power Objective Lens
Used only after getting object into focus under low power objective.
High Power Objective Lens
Used only after object has been focused under medium objective lens.
Diaphragm
Rotates to control the amount of light that reaches eyepiece.
Stage
The flat platform that holds the slides.
Stage Clips
Stage Clips
Coarse Focus Adjustment
+Bigger knob
+Controls the movement of the Stage
+Used only for large adjustments in focusing and to bring objects into view under low power only (the shortest lens).
+Coarse comes BEFORE fine
Fine Focus Adjustment
Used to sharply focus image AFTER coarse adjustment has been used
Base
+The bottom piece that supports the microscope.
+Along with the arm, the base is one of the two points you should be holding when carrying a microscope.
Light Source / Mirror
It can be controlled by a battery, or a plug in electricity source.
In old microscopes, they used a mirror.
This is located in the base of the microscope and is responsible for shining light on the object on the slide.
Slides
A rectangular piece of glass that holds the specimen you will be looking at
Lens Paper
Lens paper is used to clean microscope lenses and other glass objects without scratching them
