Science Ocean Flashcards
Become Himothy
Measure of the amount of salt in seawater
Salinity
200m water deep with rapidly dropping temperatures
Thermocline
Wind that moves only the upper few hundred meters of seawater
Surface Current
100km wide; warm water current flowing east of North Atlantic Ocean
Gulf Stream
Forms when dense seawater sinks beneath sea water that is less dense
Density Current
Current bringing deep, cold water to ocean surface
Upwelling
Collapsing waves near the shore; caused when friction slows the wave’s trough
Breaker
Come from Moon, Earth, and Sun lining up; higher high tides and lower low tides
Spring Tide
Come from the Sun, Moon, and Earth forming a right angle, lower high tides and higher low tides
Neap Tide
Tiny marine animals in the upper ocean layers; single-cell organisms
Plankton
Animals that swim around rather than drifting through current (fish, whales, shrimp, squid, turtles); eat plankton
Nekton
Organisms that make their own food through photosynthesis (plants) or chemical reactions (bacteria)
Producers
Burrow in sediment, walk, or swim on sea floor (anemones, certain types of crabs, coral, snails)
Bottom Dweller
Eat producers to gain energy
Consumers
Eat dead organisms; break down tissue and release nutrients and CO2 back into the ecosystem
Decomposers
