Science Note Cards Test DEC 4th Flashcards
Definition of Density
The relationship of how much mass is in a given volume
What are the units for density?
g/mL and g/cm3
What does the magic triangle look like?
Mass up top, Density bottom left Volume bottom right
What are the units for mass?
Grams (g)
What are the units for volume?
cm3 and mL
Why does a substance sink or float in another?
If an object has a greater density than the liquid it is placed in, it will sink. If an object is less dense than the liquid it is placed in, it will float.
What is the density of water? So, what is true about a water’s mass and volume?
1.00g/mL water’s mass and volume is a 1:1 ratio. Example: If water’s mass is 5g, its volume is 5mL
How do you calculate density when you have mass and volume?
D=M/V
How do you calculate volume when you have mass and density?
V=M/D
How do you calculate mass when you have density and volume
M=DxV
. What does it mean when someone says that density is a characteristic property of a substance?
Characteristic properties are not affected by the amount or shape of a substance. Density will always remain the same even when a substance’s mass/volume changes.
Density of Water:
1.00g/mL
Density of Corn Syrup
1.46g/mL
Density of Salt brine
1.01-1.30g/mL depending on how much salt-ours was 1.17g/mL
Density Aluminum Cylinder
2.70g/cm3
