Science Midterm Flashcards
What is matter?
anything that has mass and takes up space
What is an atom
the building block of all matter, the smallest unit of an element
What is an element
specific atom
What is a molecule
formed when atoms bond together
What is the difference between atoms and molecules
Atoms are one thing, but molecules are when two or more atoms come together
What are the 3 primary gases that make up our atmosphere
Nitrogen, Oxygen, Argon
Discuss if air pollution is worse during summer or winter and provide reasoning
It is worse in the winter because all the bad air drops down to the earth. After all, it gets colder, and cold air sinks.
What are examples of air pollution
Ozone, Lead, and Nitrogen Dioxide
What are causes of air pollution
Factories, cars, and trains
Solid characteristics
Definite shape, definite volume, and particles vibrate
Liquid characteristics
No definite shape, definite volume, and particles move over each other
Gas characteristics
No definite shape, No definite volume, and particles are very far apart
What happens if heat is added to a solid
It melts into a liquid
What happens when heat is added to a liquid
It evaporates into a gas
What is the difference between heat and temprature
Heat is the transfer of kinetic energy from one medium or object to another, and temperature is the average kinetic energy.
Effect of heat on density
When you add heat to dense things the molecules move faster and farther apart making them less dense.
Order the states of matter from most dense to least dense and provide reasoning
Solid is the densest because molecules are close. Then liquid because the molecules are still kind of close together. Least dense is gas because the molecules are really far apart.
Will hot water and cold water mix
If hot water is put on top of cold water it would not mix because hot water is less dense
