Science Junior Cert Flashcards
What does a cell membrane do?
These hold the cell together, they also control what enters and exits the cell.
What is Cytoplasm?
This is a jelly-like fluid that suspends the other structures of the cell.
What is the Nucleus?
It is what stores DNA.
What is the vacuole
It is used for temporary storage of food and waste.
What is the mitochondrion?
The mitochondrion carries out respiration within the cell.
What is respiration?
The controlled release of energy from food.
What are the function of Chloroplasts?
These contain chlorophyll which allows plants to go through photosynthesis
What do you apply to an onion cell to see it through a microscope?
Iodine.
What is Photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants make their own food.
What is the stomata?
Tiny pore-like structures on the under-surface of the leaf.
How do you test for starch?
When a food product is covered in iodine, it will turn blue-black
What does plasma do?
Transports carbon and waste.
What do white blood cells do?
Protect from disease
What do red blood cells do?
Transport oxygen
What do platelets do?
Help to clot blood and stop bleeding
What are the 4 types of teeth?
Incisors, Canines, Pre-molars and Molars.
How do you test for Carbon Dioxide?
It turns Limewater milky.
What is menstruation?
The release of uterus lining, unfertilised egg and blood through the vagina.
What is ovulation?
The release of an unfertilised egg from the ovary
What is a habitat?
The place where an animal or plant lives
What is a community (habitat terms)
A group of animals and plants that live together
What is an ecosystem?
A group of plants and animals and their environment
What is ecology?
The study of ecosystems
What is Competition? (habitat terms)
The struggle between organisms for limited resources.
What are producers?
Organisms that make their own food using sunlight by photosynthesis
What are consumers?
Animals that obtain from by eating other organisms
What are decomposers?
Organisms that feed on dead plants and animals
What is a mixture?
A mixture is made of two or more different particles
What is a compound?
A pure substance made up of 2 or more elements that are chemically combined
What are soluble substances
Able to dissolve in a liquid
What is a solvent?
The liquid in which a substance dissolves
What is a solute?
A substance that dissolves in a liquid
What is a solution?
A mixture of a solute and a solvent
What is a concentrated solution?
It contains a lot of solute in a little solvent
What is a dilute solution?
It contains a little solute in a lot of solvent.
What is Solubility?
This is the measure of a substance to dissolve in another substance
What is the atomic number?
The number of protons in the nucleus
What is the mass number?
The number of combined protons and neutrons in its nucleus.
What’s a good way to remember acidic value?
The rainbow
What are acids
Substances that turn blue litmus red
What are bases
Substances that turn red litmus blue
What is activation energy?
The minimum amount of energy for a reaction to take place
What is a galaxy?
A collection of many millions of stars
What is a dwarf planet?
A round space object that circles a star but hasn’t cleared it’s own orbit
What is a satellite?
Any object that orbits a larger object or planet
What is an asteroid?
A small rocky object that orbits a star
What is a comet?
A small object of frozen gas, ice, rock and dust that glows and produces a ball.
What is the ozone layer?
A part of the atmosphere that protects earth by absorbing the sun’s harmful radiation
