Science Inquiry Flashcards
What is the independent variable?
The independent variable is the variable that is tested, is changed or is different.
What is the dependent variable?
The dependent variable responds to the independent variable. It is the variable that is measured.
What is the constant variable?
The constant variable is the variable that is kept the same.
What is a control experiment?
A control in an experiment is the component that doesn’t change, and the variables introduced in the experiment doesn’t affect it.
It is an experiment where you know the results and compare them to your experiment.
What is a hypothesis?
A hypothesis is an educated guess.
How do you write a testable question?
How does the (IV) affect the (DV)?
How do you write a hypothesis?
If the IV (increases, decreases, or stays the same), then the dv (increases, decreases, or stays the same).
I think the IV will (increase, decrease, or stay the same when the dv (increases, decreases, or stays the same).
What does a data table look like? Be sure to show the location of the IV and DV and the relationship of the IV and DV in the title.
Find the mean, median, mode and range for each set of numbers.
24, 31, 12, 38, 12, 15
Find the mean, median, mode and range for each set of numbers.
85, 58, 72, 85, 46, 93
A student wanted to add three different liquids to the same plant, in the same soil and same size and type of pot. They also added the same volume of liquid. They measured the height of the plan. What is the independent, dependent and constant variable in this experiment?
How do you write a conclusion for a lab experiment
- Restate the question:Restate the overall purpose of the experiment (include IV and DV in this sentence.) One format: The purpose of the experiment was to investigate the effect of the (IV) on the (DV)
- Re-state the hypothesis. State whether the hypothesis was supported by the data or
not supported by the data or partially supported/ bu the data. Discuss the data. What were the major findings? (Summarize your data and graph results)
Discuss the mean, median, mode and range or other analytical math. - How could this experiment be improved?
. - What could be studied next after this experiment?
Example:
