Science Grade 7: Ecology Flashcards
What is a system?
A system contains many components that work together. Each component has a purpose and contributes to the system which has one or multiple general goals. The key aspect of systems is that the components have a relationship and interact.
What are the four natural systems?
- Biosphere (life)
- Geosphere (rocks)
- Hydrosphere (water)
- Atmosphere (air)
What are the benefits of systems?
The main benefit of systems is that they are more efficient than no system at all. They also make things possible that might not be without a system
What are challenges with systems?
The main challenge of systems is that there is a chance of corruption upon certain events
What is evaporation?
The change of state of water from liquid into gas
What is condensation?
The change of state of water from gas to liquid
What is a run-off?
A way of rainwater ending up in rivers and then back in the ocean
What is percolation?
A way of rainwater ending up in the ocean by traveling through the soil
What does impermeable mean?
Does not allow water to pass through
What are some examples of cycles?
- Water cycle
- Carbon cycle
- Oxygen cycle
- Life cycle
- Rock cycle
What is weathering?
The action of wind, water, and ice changing (crushing / breaking down) rocks
What is erosion?
The transport of weathered rocks
