Science Glossary Flashcards
anisotropic
having a different physical property (or value) if measured in a different direction, e.g., wood is stronger parallel to the grain than perpendicular to it.
Stokes shift
the spectral shift to lower energy from the incident (excitation) light and scattered (emitted) light.
soliton
is a nonlinear, self-reinforcing, localized wave packet that is strongly stable in that it preserves its shape while propagating freely at constant velocity and recovers it even after collisions with other located wave packets.
phonon
is a collective excitation in a periodic, elastic arrangement of atoms or molecules in condensed matter in solids and some liquids.
plasmon
is a quantum of oscillations of electron density in conducting media (aka plasma oscillations).
