Science Finals Flashcards
What are Dependent and Independent variables
Dependent Variable:also known as the responding variable, in a controlled experiment, it is the factor that is observed or measured during an experiment.
Independent Variable: Also known as the manipulative variable, in a controlled experiments, it is the factor you want to test.
Natural selection
The process by which organisms with variations that help them survive in their environment live longer, compete better, and reproduce more than those that do not have the variation.
Gene
A section of DNA that has genetic information for one trait.
Variation
Slight differences in inherited traits among individual members of a species.
Camoflauge
An adaption that enables species to blend in with it’s environment.
Population stabilization
The population must change for the species not to go extinct or to overpopulate.
Community
The populations living in the same area at the same time.
Population
All the organisms of the same species that live in the same area at the same time.
Niche
The way a species interact with abiotic and biotic factors to obtain food, find shelter, and fulfill other needs.
Components of an ecosystem.
It basically makes an ecosystem livable.
How are ecosystems organized into biomes?
It are habitats with similar traits like lush vegetation, like rain forests.
The nonliving parts of an ecosystem.
Abiotic Factors
Living or once living things in an ecosystem.
Biotic Factors
The size of a population compared to the amount of space available.
Population Density; How to Calculate it:
Population density= number of individuals
Unit area of volume of space
Why do populations increase and decrease?
It depends on the population of the predators prey. Most time you see predator population decrease when prey decrease. However, when a predator population goes down, prey population will go up.
