Science Finals Flashcards

1
Q

What are Dependent and Independent variables

A

Dependent Variable:also known as the responding variable, in a controlled experiment, it is the factor that is observed or measured during an experiment.
Independent Variable: Also known as the manipulative variable, in a controlled experiments, it is the factor you want to test.

Q

Natural selection

A

The process by which organisms with variations that help them survive in their environment live longer, compete better, and reproduce more than those that do not have the variation.

The size of a population compared to the amount of space available.

A

Population Density; How to Calculate it:
Population density= number of individuals
Unit area of volume of space

15
Q

Why do populations increase and decrease?

A

It depends on the population of the predators prey. Most time you see predator population decrease when prey decrease. However, when a predator population goes down, prey population will go up.

16
Q

The place within an ecosystem that provides food, water, shelter, and other biotic and abiotic factors an organism needs to survive and reproduce.

A

Habitat

17
Q

The act of one organism, a predator, feeding on another organism, it’s prey.

A

Predation

18
Q

The amount of matter, mass, and energy will never change in the universe.

A

The law of conservation of mass/matter/energy

19
Q

Organisms that use an outside energy source, such as the Sun, and produce their own food.

A

Producers, they also give energy to consumers.

20
Q

Organisms that only eat plants and other producers.

A

Herbivore

21
Q

Organisms that eat herbivores and other consumers.

A

Carnivore

22
Q

Organisms that eat both producers and consumers.

A

Omnivore
