Science Final Flashcards
An organism that feeds on decaying matter after it has been broken down by decomposers.
Detritivore
Energy flows from producers to consumers and finally to decomposers.
Grazing Food Web
Energy from producers flows to decomposers as waste. Decomposers break down organic matter, giving food and energy for consumers.
Detrital Food Web
Important decomposers; widely distributed and can break down just about any type of organic matter.
Bacteria
Primary decomposer of litter, grows a branching newtork of hyphae - creates the enzymes necessary to decompose ligin, a chemical complex substance found in wood.
Fungi
Contains organic carbon, usually oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, phosphorus, and/or sulfur.
Organic Compound
Organism too small to be seen by the unaided human eye, such as bacteria and fungi.
Microorganisms
A collective term for all living organisms on land.
Terrestrial Biosphere
All waters on Earth’s surface, such as lakes and seas.
Hydrosphere
Transport of oxygen from outside air to cells within tissues and the transport of carbon dioxide in the opposite direction.
Respiration
Material from living or recently living organisms, composed of organic molecules.
Biomass
Container for piles of biomass to promote decomposition and decay, recyclable fertilizer.
Compost Bin
Movement of water through the atmosphere
Water Cycle
Movement of Carbon from nonliving environment into living things and back.
Carbon Cycle
Movement of nitrogen from nonliving environment into living things and back.
Nitrogen Cycle.
