Science Ecosystem Flashcards

1
Q

What might be effects of adding a new species to an ecosystem?

A

The new species would start using all of the resources the native species uses

Q

What do organisms need to live, grow, and reproduce

A

When resources are high the population is more likely to thrive. When resources are low, the population is more likely to decrease

Q

How is the number of organisms in a population related to the things they need to live, grow and reproduce?

A

They both live in that area. Some of them might have a mutualistic or symbiotic relationship

Q

How does competition for resources affect individual organisms AND populations?

A

The more competitors the harder it is to get resources this is because the organisms are doing more defending rather than eating

Q

How do changes in predator population size affect prey populations and the overall ecosystem?

A

The size affects prey because the more predators the more they will eat the prey so the prey will decrease.

Q

How can a relationship between two species benefit both species? How can this beneficial relationship affect each population?

A

When two species have a mutual relationship they rely on each other, which is good because they most likely are not decreasing in population. Something bad about it though is that if one of them decreases the other one will start decreasing.

Q

What is the effect on populations of organisms when the abiotic components of an ecosystem change?

A

When snowfall increases, it can make it hard to find resources, but when it decreases it is much easier to find resources.

Q

How can we best compare multiple solutions to a problem?

A

You could come up with a list of pros and cons which ever one has the most pros is the winner.
