Science - Earth Sciences Flashcards
First appearance of single-called organisms?
3.5 Ga (Billion years ago)
First appearance of life?
600 Ma (millions of years ago)
Order the layers of earth.
Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Crust (lithosphere), Mantle, Outercore, Innercore
State the theory of continental drift.
The theory of continental drift is a theory proposed by Alfred Wegener in 1912. The German meteorologist noticed that today’s continents fit together like a jigsaw puzzle, and that they may rejoin. The continents used to be joined, and they are still moving today.
Order the units of time.
Eon, Era, Period, Epoch, Age
The supercontinent was called?
Pangaea.
The superocean was called?
Panthalassa.
Alfred Wegener proposed that, over time, Pangaea broke into 2 large continents named?
Laurasia and Gondwanaland.
How deep is earth?
6,370 km deep.
How deep is the world’s largest man-made hole?
15 km deep.
Scientists use seismic waves from earthquakes to determine?
The various chemical compositions inside the Earth.
Seismic waves’ energies travel through?
The earth’s crust.
State the Shrinking Theory.
The shrinking theory was what geologists of the 1800s believed, that the crust began to shrink and wrinkle. They believed that the continents were the high parts of the wrinkles and that oceans covered the lower parts.
How many tectonic plates are there?
30
