Science D1 Flashcards
Magnet
An object that has the property of attracting certain materials.
North Pole
One of the ends of a magnet where the magnetic force is strongest it points to the north when the magnet is allowed to move freely.
South Pole
One of the ends of a magnet where the magnetic force is strongest it points to the south when the magnet is allowed to move freely.
Lines of force
The lines that pattern showing the size and shape of a magnetic force field.
Lodestone
A naturally magnetic rock found at or near Earth’s surface.
Auroras
The times when displays occur are also marked by disturbances of radio signals.
Magnetism
A magnet’s property of attracting things.
Magnetic field
The area in which a magnet works.
Maglev train
Trains NA’s that run on electricity and float so it causes friction.
Compass
A device that contains a magnetized needle that moves freely and shows direction.
Permanent/ temporary magnets
Permanent magnets are magnetized for a very long time not forever and are very hard to make. Temporary magnets work for only a short time.
Alike poles and unlike poles
Alike poles wile always repel. Unlike poles will definitely attract.
Lodestone hung from a string
It always lines itself north-south direction.
Repel and Attract
Repel will force itself away from another magnet, attract will stick itself together.
How to magnetize a nail
Stroke a permanent magnet against a temporary magnet fast.
Strong part of a magnet
The strongest part of a Magee is the north and south poles.
How Earth is magnetized
By its center being made of iron.
Levitation
Floating above the air.
Earth’s two sets of poles
North and south poles
How Earth and a magnet alike?
Earth and a magnet are alike because Earth is a magnet.
