Science Chemistry Test Flashcards
What are the six ideas of particle theory?
Temperature, Constant motion, Space, Uniqueness, Composition, Attraction
What is the “temperature” idea in particle theory?
hotter environment, particles move faster
cooler environment, particles slow down
What is the “constant motion” idea in particle theory?
Particles are always moving, even solids
What is the “space” idea in particle theory
there is space between the particles
What is the “uniqueness” idea in particle theory?
Particles of one type of matter are different from those of another type of matter
What is the “composition” idea in particle theory?
All matter is composed of particles
What is the “attraction” idea in particle theory?
All particles are attracted to each other
What is a mixture?
two or more pure substances mixed together
What is a homogeneous mixture?
A mixture which the substances are not distinguishable from each other
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
A mixture where the substances are distinguishable from each other
What are some physical properties?
lustre, malleability, colour, ductility, does light go through (transparent, translucent, opaque), change of states points (eg. boiling, freezing…), hardness (Moh’s hardness scale), density, conductivity
What does opaque mean?
no light can go through
What does translucent mean?
some light can go through (blurry)
What does transparent mean?
most light can go through
What is matter?
Anything that has mass and volume
What is a pure substance?
All the particles in the substance are the same
What is an elemental pure substance?
The pure substance is made up of only one element
What is a compound pure substance?
The pure substance is made up of two or more elements
What is the definition of a physical property?
Something that we can determine with our senses (sight, smell, touch, etc)
What is the definition of a chemical property?
a substance’s reactivity
What are the differences between a physical change and a chemical change?
Physical change: change in shape, form, etc, but no new substance is formed
Chemical change: a new substance is formed
What is the formula to calculate density?
mass / volume
What is the formula to calculate mass?
density x volume
What is the formula to calculate volume?
mass / density
