Science Characteristics of Life Flashcards
How do you know something is living?
It must demonstrate all
of the characteristics of life
Organization define
These levels has specific structures and functions that work together to keep the living thing alive.
Growth and Development define
Living things growth, which involves an increase in size or number of cells, and development, which involves changes in their structure and function over time.
Reproduction define
Living things are capable of producing offspring through reproduction.
Responses to Stimuli define
Living things can sense and respond to changes in their environment or stimuli, both internal and external. This includes things like responding to changes in temperature, light, or sound, as well as responding to internal stimuli like hunger or thirst.
Homeostasis define
Living things are able to maintain a stable internal environment despite changes in their external environment or the demands on their cells. This can include things like regulating body temperature, and blood sugar levels.
Use of Energy define
Living things require energy to carry out their life processes or activities. They obtain energy from food or sunlight and use it to carry out various processes like growth, movement, and reproduction.
Cell membrane what are the parts of the cell and the functions they perform?
This is like a gatekeeper that surrounds the cell and controls what goes in and out of the cell.
Cell wall what are the parts of the cell and the functions they perform?
This is like a protective layer around the cell that gives it shape and support. It’s only found in plant, fungal, and bacterial cells.
Cytoplasm what are the parts of the cell and the functions they perform?
This is like a jelly that fills the cell and contains all the cell’s parts. It’s where many of the cell’s processes happen.
Nucleus what are the parts of the cell and the functions they perform?
This is like the control center of the cell. It contains the DNA that tells the cell what to do and when to do it.
Chloroplast what are the parts of the cell and the functions they perform?
This is like a solar panel that’s only found in plant cells. It helps the plant make food using energy from the sun.
Mitochondria what are the parts of the cell and the functions they perform?
These are like the powerhouses of the cell. They turn food into energy that the cell can use.
Vacuole what are the parts of the cell and the functions they perform?
This is like a storage container for the cell. It stores water, food, and waste products, and helps keep the cell’s shape and structure.
Name the six characteristics of all life
- Organization
- Growth and development
- Reproduction
- Response to stimuli
- Homeostasis
- Use of energy
