Science Chapter8 Flashcards
What are fossils?
The preserved remains or traces of an organism that lived in the past
What is a mold?
A mold is an imprint
Cast fossil
A type of fossil formed when a mold, created by the impression or cavity left by a decaying organism, is filled with sediment or other material, resulting in a replica of the original organism.
Petrified Fossil definition
Stone fossils that hardens mineral to rock
Carbon film fossil
Refers to a type of fossil preservation where the organic material of an organism leaves behind a thin layer of carbon residue.
What is a trace fossil?
A type of fossil that preserves evidence of ancient organism behavior or activity rather than the physical remains of the organism itself.
Preserved remains?
Also known as body fossils, are the physical remains or traces of ancient organisms that have been preserved in the fossil record.
What is the fossil record, and why is it important?
The fossil record refers to the collection of fossils that have been discovered and studied by paleontologists, providing a record of life on earth spanning billions of years.
List the three factors that impact natural selection and give a brief description of each factor:
Variation: Different Types
Competition: they have to fight to survive
Over production: too many of them
Selection: some variations make individuals better adapted to their environment. Those individuals were more likely to survive and reproduce and their offspring would inherit this helpful characteristic.
Species
When a group of animals can reproduce and has their own unique traits.
Ex:Dogs,Wolves,Coyotes
Adaptation
When an animal changes to bet used to.
Ex: Different bird beaks for their different types of food.
Evolution
When an animal evolves or changes.
Ex: Monkey to Human
Scientific theory
Organisms might be related
Ex: Charles Darwin
Natural selection
Whatever nature does happens.
Ex: Animals in the wild
Artificial Selection
When somebody decides what to breed
Ex: Chicken for Big Chicken breast
