Science: Chapter 5 Lesson 1-5 Flashcards
Climate
The average weather conditions of a place or a region
Current
Ongoing movement of ocean weather
Atmosphere
Forms of five layers of gases around the Earth
Troposphere
Between 8 and 18 kilometers thick. Contains 99% of air in the atmosphere. The air is most dense in this layer. The layer closest to Earth
Air Pressure
The force put on a given area by the weight above it
Altitude
Height above Earth’s surface
Humidity
The amount of water vapor in the air.
What can change air pressure?
T.H.A.V. T- temperature H- height A- amount of water vapor V- volume
Barometer
an instrument that is used to measure atmospheric pressure
What are the two kinds of barometers?
Mercury and Aneroid
Convection
is the transfer of heat through the movement of a gas or a liquid.
Equator
an imaginary line called the equator runs around the Earth’s middle
Sea Breeze
The movement of air from the water to land.
Land Breeze
The movement of air from the land to water
Global Winds
blows steadily in predictable directions and over long distances
