Science Chapter 5 Flashcards
What are valence electrons
Electrons that have the highest energy level and are held loosely
What is a chemical bond
The force of attraction that holds two atoms together
How can you tell whether or not an element will react with other elements
If it has a full number of valence electrons or not (must have 8)
What is an ion
An electrically charged atom
What is an ionic bond
The attraction between two oppositely charged ions
Do molecular compounds or ionic compounds have a higher melting point
Molecular compounds have lower melting points, lower boiling points, and cannot conduct electricity
What are the properties of metals
Shiny, hard, high melting and boiling points, and good conductors of heat and electricity
What is an alloy
A mixture made of 2 or more elements that have properties of a metal
What does the phrase “sea of electrons” describe
The ease with which they can change shape, their ability to conduct electricity, and their ability to conduct heat
What is a metallic bond
An attraction between a positive metal ion and the electrons surrounding it
What is a covalent bond
The chemical bond formed when two atoms share electrons
What does nonpolar mean
It is a bond in which electrons are shared equally
What is a molecule
A neutral group of atoms joined by covalent bonds
What is a bond in which two pairs of electrons are shared between atoms
Double bond
What does polar mean
A covalent bond where electrons are shared unequally
