Science Chapter 4 Flashcards
What is a mixture
A mixture is when 2 or more pure substances are mixed together
What is a solution
a solution is a type of mixture that which one substance dissolves in another creating a seethrough liquid (E.g walt water)
dissolve
to break up into invisable particles.
soluble
only soluble substances can dissolve, (Soluble example salt)
Solvent
the substance that is doing the dissolving
Examples of solvents and solubles
Salt (Soluble) water (Solvent)
what does it mean when it is dilute
A solutions with a little solute but alot of solvent
what does it mean when it is Concentrated
A solutions with a lot of solute
what does it mean when it is saturated
When there is so much solute that it wouldn’t mix with the solvent anymore
What is a suspension
When the solute and solvent doesn’t mix E.g Sand and water
What is a magnetic separtaion
Used to seperate magnetic substances from non-magnetic ones. E.g Iron fillings from sand
What is a gravity separtaion
Used to seperate heavier substances from lighter ones
E.g Gold panning
What is a decating separtaion
Lets the layers seperate naturally then carefully remove top layer from bottom layer
What is a sieving separtaion
Barrier with holes in it. small substances can moe through holes , larger ones cannot
E.g spaghetti strainer.
What is a filtration separtaion
Similar to seiving however uses filter paper with microscopic holes.
