Science Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is quantitative data?
Data that can be described with numbers
What is qualitative data?
Data that can be described with words
What is primary data?
Data that was obtained by an original person. Data that was personally found out by you.
What is secondary data?
Data that was obtained from the work of other people. They aren’t your own works.
What are mistakes?
Mistakes are things that can be avoided if you took more care.
What are errors?
Errors are small things that are unavoidable. They happen naturally.
What is a parallax error?
The error of where you accidentally read something on a slight angle, causing the measurement to appear differently to the correct one.
What is a reading error?
A reading error is where measurements fall in between the markings of a measuring device. This causes you to have to make an estimation. Many people might get different estimations.
What is an instrument error?
When an instrument is faulty and can’t be trusted. It is not your fault but the instrument’s that you are using.
What is a human reflex error?
When someone’s reflexes aren’t fast enough as their reaction time isn’t fast. Everyone has different reaction times, causing you to have different measurements to others.
What are zero errors?
They occur when an electronic device does not read zero when nothing is placed on it.
What are outliers?
Outliers are data that is abnormal to the rest of the data. They are outside the “main cluster” of data.
What is ethics?
The study of what is right and wrong.
What is the correct format of an experiment?
Heading, purpose, hypothesis, materials, procedure, results, review.
What is the line of best fit?
It is when on a line graph, you draw a straight line through the centre of all your points rather than connecting them dot-to-dot. This makes trend more visible and allow you to predict missing measurements.
