Science - CH5 Heridity Flashcards
The changing of the arrangement of DNA that makes up a gene
Genetic Engineering
Insertion of a useful segment of DNA from one organism to another
Recombinant DNA
A normal allele is placed in a virus and that virus is given to a person with a diseased version of the allele
Gene Therapy
Created by inserting the genes
that produce desired traits in one
plant into another (known as
GMO)
Genetically Engineered Plants
The offspring of two homozygous parents show an intermediate phenotype with neither allele being dominant
Incomplete dominance
controlled by more than two alleles for traits and produce more than three phenotypes
Multiple Alleles
The alleles for blood type are A, B, and O
Blood Types in Humans
Occurs when a group of gene pairs acts together to produce a trait
Polygenic Inheritance
changes in genes that can be harmful, helpful, or have no effect
Mutations
Caused by the addition or loss of a chromosome
Chromosome Disorders
Caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21
Down Syndrome
Caused by an extra X chromosome in men
Klinefelter’s Syndrome
Caused by an extra copy of chromosome 18
Edward’s Syndrome
Caused by recessive alleles inherited from parents
Recessive Genetic Disorders
Recessive genetic disorder that causes breathing and digestion problems
Cystic Fibrosis
