Science - Biology Flashcards
what is a gene?
A gene controls a characteristic,
or part of a characteristic
what is a chromosome?
A chromosome carries genes that contain instructions needed to make new cells
what is a chromosome made from?
The molecule DNA
what is a gamete?
A gamete is a sex cell that contain one copy of each type of chromosome and are haploid
how many stages are in the cell cycle?
There are three stages
What is the length of the cell cycle?
It can either take less that 24 hours or several years
what phase is responsible for diving the cells into two?
Cytokinesis
what phase is responsible for diving the nucleus?
mitosis
what phase is responsible for DNA replication?
Interphase
why does the body need to produce new cells?
For growth and to repair damaged or worn out cells
what is the cell that has pairs of chromosomes?
diploid
what does the human body cells contain?
46 chromosomes arrange in 23 pairs
what is the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes?
Type 1 - the pancreas doesn’t produce or doesn’t produce enough insulin
Type 2 - The body stops responding to insulin
what are the treatments of type 1 and type 2 diabetes?
Type 1 - insulin shots around meal times
Type 2 - medication to lower glucose levels or exercise
