Science Assessment November 21 Flashcards
Energy
The ability to do work
Energy Transformation
The change of energy from one form to another
Kinetic Energy
Energy from objects in motion
Potential Energy
The energy that comes from position or condition
Ohm’s Law
Voltage= Current X Resistance
Electricity
A form of energy resulting from the existence of charged particles
Electric Current
The steady flow of electrons through a conductor. Electric current is measured in units of amps.
Conductors
Allow electrons to move through them more easily. The best conductors are metals, copper, silver, and iron.
Joule
A measure of the capacity to do work or generate heat
Transformers
A device that transfers some electric energy from one alternating current to another
Ions
An atom or particle with a net charge
Watts
A unit of power measuring the electric flow
A Parallel Circuit
A circuit that has more than one path for the electric current to flow
Alternating Current
The value of the quantity and direction of the current is not a constant, it changes at a regular interval
Direct Current
An electric current that flows consistently in one direction
Circuit
A circuit is a closed path through which an electric current can flow
Voltage
It is a measure of the electric potential energy and is measured in units of volts.
Semiconductors
It conducts sometimes, not others
Current
The rate of flow of negative charges in an electric circuit
Insulators
A material in which electrons cannot move easily from place to place is called an insulator. Examples of common materials that are insulators are plastic, wood, glass, and rubber.
Electrodes
A good conductor of electricity that usually connects non-metallic parts of a circuit
Resistance
The measure of how difficult it is for electrons to flow through a material is called resistance.
Battery
A measure of the electrical potential energy and is measured in units of volts.
Power
The rate at which energy is transferred by an electric circuit
Series Circuit
A circuit with only one path for the electrical current to flow
Catylyst
A substance that changes the rate of a chemical reaction without any change to its own structure
Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy cannot be created nor destroyed, only changed in form
Difference between parallel circuit and series circuit (draw as well)
A series circuit only has 1 path to flow, while a parallel circuit has more than one path to flow
Difference between endothermic and exothermic
Exothermic releases heat causing the temperature of the surroundings to rise while the endothermic process absorbs heat and cools the surrounding
