Science and Technology Ch. 1 Flashcards
A way of learning about the world through observation and logical reasoning.
science
The process of using one or more of your senses to gather information.
observing
An observation that deals with characteristics that cannot be expressed in numbers.
qualitative observation
An observation that deals with a number or amount.
quantitative observation
The process of making an interpretation (of something that has happened or is happening ) based on observations and prior knowledge.
inferring
The process of forecasting what will happen in the future based on past experience or evidence.
predicting
The process of grouping together items that are alike in some way.
classifying
Comparing observations and data to reach a conclusion about them.
evaluating
The process of creating representations of complex objects or processes. A graph is an example.
making models
An attitude of doubt.
skepticism
An outlook influenced by the beliefs, social forms and traits of a group.
cultural bias
A mistake in the design of an experiment that makes a particular result more likely.
experimental bias
This describes the way of making a decision or drawing a conclusion based on available evidence.
objective
This describes the influence of personal feelings on a decision or conclusion.
subjective
A way to explain things by starting with a general idea and then applying the idea to a specific observation.
deductive reasoning
Using specific observations to make generalizations.
inductive reasoning
The ongoing process of discovery in science.
scientific inquiry
A possible explanation for a set of observations or an answer to a scientific question.
hypothesis
A factor that can change in an experiment.
variable
The one factor that a scientist changes during an experiment (independent variable).
manipulated variable
The factor that changes as a result of the changes to the manipulated variable (dependent variable)
responding variable
An experiment in which only one variable is manipulated at a time.
controlled experiment
The facts, figures and other evidence gathered through observations.
data
A well tested explanation for a wide range of observations or experimental results.
scientific theory
A statement that describes what scientists expect to happen every time (under a particular set of conditions).
scientific law
An outlook influenced by a person’s likes and dislikes.
personal bias
