Science And Religion Flashcards

1
Q

What are the origins of life?

A

Darwin - theory of evolution - life changed over time through natural processes (inc. “survival of the fittest”) humans as part of evolution. Challenged creation of life by God - change suggests lack of perfection.(human imperfection explained by ‘Fall’) - Adam and Eve.

Q

What is the agreement between science and religion?

A

Most Christians now accept scientific theories as best explanation of how God works. Many scientists are religious believers, still wonders of God’s creation - complexity demonstrating God’s complexity and omnipotence in creating it.

Q

What is Human Evolution?

A

Humans as special part of creation challenged by evolution - contradicts idea of perfect before ‘Fall’ - no longer ‘special’ but part of natural world. Could lead to loss of idea of responsibility or loss of idea of world as ‘for our use’.

Q

What is Absolute V Evolving?

A

Science ideals with evolving ideals - empirical observation can result, over time, in new, developed understanding of what is ‘truth’; religion sees truth as coming from God - it is fixed and unchanging, like God, the ultimate Truth that science could eventually come to recognise.

Q

What do we mean by How or Why?

A

Some claim science seeks to explain how things happen and religion to explain why. Similar claims are made regarding morality. However, science does seek to explain why - but may see this as the final point to be discovered. Religion may claim this is where God will be revealed.

Q

Does society favour scientific truth?

A

Modern societies see scientific progress as both spectacular and unchallenged. However, many do not see it addressing moral questions regarding the application of science. Many see religious faith as compatible with science.

Q

What is the cosmological revolution?

A

Copernicus/Galileo - challenge traditional religious understanding of perfection of God’s creation (Galileo - moon imperfections) and earth at the centre of the universe according to Genesis 1 - Copernicus found out that actually the earth revolves around the sun.
