Science - 8Ea to 8Ed - Combustion Flashcards
What is a fuel?
It is a chemical substance from which stored energy can be transferred
What are the reactants in the following word equation:
hydrogen + oxygen = water
Hydrogen and oxygen
What are the three types in which energy can be transferred in a fire?
Light, heat and sound
What are hydrocarbons?
They are substances which their molecules contain only carbon and hydrogen
What is oxidation?
When a substance reacts with oxygen to form an oxide
What does exothermic mean?
It means that it releases energy as heat
What components make up the fire triangle?
Oxygen, heat and fuel
How does a fire extinguisher work?
The water removes the heat from the fire
What type of fire extinguisher should you use in an oil fire?
You should use a foam extinguisher or you could also use a fire blanket
What type of fire extinguisher should you use in an electrical fire?
You should use a carbon dioxide extinguisher
What is complete combustion?
It is when carbon reacts fully with oxygen
What substance is formed when oxygen reacts fully with carbon?
Carbon Dioxide
What substance is formed when oxygen reacts partly with carbon?
Carbon Monoxide
What substance is formed when oxygen does not react with carbon?
Soot
What are pollutants?
They are products of burning fuels which harm living things and damage the environment
