Science Flashcards
Weathering
The disintegration of rock into smaller and smaller fragments
Breaks down and loosens the surface minerals of rock so they can be transported away by agents of erosion such as water, wind and ice
Erosion
Process by which surface of Earth gets worn down, caused by natural elements
Volcanoes
Opening in Earth’s crust that allows molten rock from beneath the crust to reach the surface
Earthquakes
Result of sudden release of stored energy in earth crust that creates seismic waves; caused by plate tectonics
Current
Steady flow of one fluid within the body of another
Waves
A transfer of energy
Ocean waves: mechanical waves, travels through a medium
Tides
Caused by the gravitational pull of the moon
Water cycle
The cycling of water in and out of the atmosphere
Evaporation
Liquid—> Gas
Condensation
Gas —> Liquid
Humidity
Presence of water vapor in the atmosphere
Precipitation
Rain, snow, sleet or hail - weather condition where something’s falling from the sky
Surface runoff
Is water from rain, snowmelt or other resources. Flows over the land surfaces
Clouds
Large collection of water drops or ice crystals floating in the sky
Climate
Average condition due to temperature, humidity and other meteorological elements in an area of Earths surface
Weather
Day to day condition of the atmosphere
Rock Cycle
Model that describes the formation, breakdown and reformation of a rock.
Igneous -> Sedimentary -> Metamorphic -> Magma
Igneous Rock
Cooling and solidification of magma or lava
Sedimentary Rock
Formed by accumulation or deposition of small particles
Metamorphic Rocks
Transform from existing rock types; by heat and pressure
Carbon Cycle
Carbon is exchanged among the biosphere, pedosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere of the Earth.
Nitrogen Cycle
Nitrogen passes successively from air to soil to organisms and back to air or soil
Minerals
Formed by the break down of large rocks: iron, potassium, magnesium, calcium etc.
Organic minerals
Any compound containing carbon and organic acids
Living organisms
Composed of cells; shows process of growth
Water & air
Critical resources at the heart of adaptation to and mitigation of climate change
