Science Flashcards
Anatomical position
body shaming face forward, arms at side palms facing forward (thumbs outside)
Sagittal plane
aka midline
divides body L/R
Medial
closer to midline
Lateral
further away from midline
Transverse plane
parallel to ground
divides body into superioe 9top)/ inferior (bottom)
Proximal
closer to navel or trunk
next to
Distal
away from navel or trunk
Coronal plane
divides body anterior (front) and posterior (back)
Musculoskeletal system
bones, tendons, ligaments, & cartiliage
Spongy
aka cancellous
contains red bones marrow, where red/white blood cells are produced
Compact
very dense, support body, & stores calcium
Osteoblasts
build bones in a process called ossification
Osteoclasts
break down bones
help regulate the body’s calcium levels by breaking down bone to release calcium
Osteocytes
regulates osteoblasts & osteoclasts
Long bone
femur, tibia, ulna, humerous
provide strength, structure, & mobility
short bones
carpal (wrist) & tarsal (foot)
flat bones
protect internal organs & provides surface for muscles to attach,
sternum, ribs, and pelvis
sesamoid bones
embedded within a tendon muscle
ex. knee cap
irregular bones
vertebral column, skull, elbow
synovial joint
contains synovial fluid which lubricant the joints
two types: ball & socket and hinge
ball & socket: hip, shoulder
hinge: elbow & knee
fibrous joint
connected to each other by ligaments not movable
ex. skull bones
cartilaginous joint
hold bones together by cartilage, they can move more fibrous joints less than synovial joints
ex spine
axial skeleton
consist 6 parts: the skull, rib cage, spinal column, ossicles of the middle ear, hyoid bone & sternum
skull
consists cranium & facial bones, orbit (eye socket), nasal bone, maxilla (upper jaw), mandible (lower jaw), zygomatic bone (cheekbone)
rib cage
consists 12 pairs of bones & sternum, protects heart, lungs, trachea, esophagus & great vessels.
Sternum divide into 3 parts, manubrium, middle body& xiphoid process
spinal column
protects the spinal cord consist of 5 parts cervical (7) thoracic (12) lumbar (5) pelvic (5) coccyx(4)
appendicular skeleton
consists bones of the shoulder girdle, pelvis, upper/lower limbs
