science Flashcards
Abiotic factor
non living factors thatch affect at a community
Abundance
A measure of how common or rare a particular type of organism is in a given environment
Adaptation
special features that make an organsim particularly well suited to the environment where it lives
biotic factor
living factors that affect a community
community
a group of inderpendent organisms living in an ecosystem
competition
the process by which living organism compete with each other for limited resources such as food, light, or reproductive partners
distribution
where particular types of organisms are found within an environment
ecosystem
the interaction of a community of living organisms with the non-living parts of their environment
extremophiles
organism that can survive and reproduce in extreme conditions
habitat
the natural home or environment of an animal, plant, or other organisms.
interdependence
the network of relationships between different organisms within a community. For example, each species depends on other species for food, shelter, pollination, seed dispersal.
mean
the arithmetical average of a series of number
median
the middle number in a list of numbers
mode
the number which occurs most often in a set of data
Quadrat
a sample area used for measuring the abundance and distribution of organisms in the field
Quantitative sampling
records the numbers of organisms than just the type
population
a community of animals or plants whose members can interbreed
range
the maximum and minimum values for independent or dependant variables- important in ensuring that any patterns are detected
sample size
the size of sample in an investigation
transect
a measured line or area which ecological measurements are made
producer
An organism that makes its own food by photosynthesis. They are the starting point of all food chains
consumer
Organism that eats something
predator
Consumer that hunts
prey
Consumer that is hunted
biodiversity
The variety of all the living organisms within the earth or ecosystem. A good thing
