Science Flashcards
Define Substance
Any state of matter of a particular composition or makeup.
Define Matter
Anything that has weight and occupies space or has a measurable volume.
Three physical states of matter are:
Solids: have a definite volume and shape.
Liquids: have a definite volume but conform to the shape of the container they are in.
Gases: have neither a definite volume or shape, but have the ability to diffuse or expand indefinitely.
Define element
Any of more than 100 fundamental substances that consist of atoms of only one kind, and cannot be reduced by ordinary means.
Define compound
A substance composed of two or more substances or similar elements.
T/F Mixtures, unlike compounds, can be separated by mechanical means.
True
T/F Water is a compound which consists of 2 parts hydrogen and 1 part oxygen.
True
What is an atom?
The smallest particle of an element which can exist either alone or in combination with other elements.
The two main parts of an atom are:
Nucleus and Electrons
The nucleus of an atom contains two kinds of particles which are:
Protons and Neutrons
The _______ atom is the simplest of all atoms containing only one proton and one electron.
Hydrogen
Five elements commonly used in the piping industry and their chemical symbol.
Nitrogen - N Oxygen - O Argon - Ar Copper - Cu Zinc - Zn
Lightest element known, with an atomic weight of 1.0080
Hydrogen
The heaviest element know is ununoctium (Uuo) with an atomic weight of:
293
T/F atoms are solid
False
