Science 6 test Flashcards
What happens in each phase of the cell cycle.
In Interphase the cell grows and develops chromosomes and dna are copied
In Prophase chromosomes are visible nduclear membrane disappears nucleolus disappears
In metaphase spindle ribers attach to chromosomes. Chromosomes line up across the equator or middle of the cell.
In anaphase chromosomes divide into two sets each half or set is puulled away to opposite sides if the cell
In telophase two nuclear membranes begin to form. cells begin to seperate.
In cytokinesis two cell divides cells daughter cell same number of separate
What characteristics do all organisms have in common?
They need energy to carry out life processes, they are composed of one or more cells, respond to their enviroment, grow and reproduce, maintain a stable internal enviroment, and evolve or change over time.
What are the three parts of the cell theory and how did it come to be?All living organisms are composed of one or more cells.
All living organisms are composed of one or more cells.
A cell is the basic structural and functional unit of living organisms
All cells arise from pre-existing cells.
They came to be based on a conclusion made by Schwann and Matthias Schleiden in 1838, after comparing their observations of plant and animal cells.
Why is the process of osmosis important in cells?
It is important because that is how cells grow and expand and create more cells
Why is homeostasis so important?
It is important because if you dont cool down or warm up when it is hot or cold you can die
Describe the cell cycle AND two reasons why it is important.
The cell cycle has 6 phases which go interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, and cytokinesis. This is the growing and reproducing of cells.
One imporant thing is if we did not have the cell cycle we would not grow.
The second imortant thing is that if we dont have it we would not be able to be strong and survive.
What role to basic cell structures play: DNA, nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm
The cell membrane provides protection for the cells The nucleus is like the cells control center. The cytoplasm Holds the cells and protects them from damage. The DNA holds the information so that those things can change.
Why do organisms respond to a stimulus? Provide examples.
They respond because they want to go to it or they want to go away from it. Example a plant that needs sunlight will go to the area where there is most of it.
What is the difference between an acquired and an inherited trait?
An acquired trait is something that you worked for to have like being an athlete. An inherited trait is something that gets passed to you by genes like blue hair.
Adaptation
a change or the process of change by which an organism or species becomes better suited to its environment.
Cell
the smallest, basic unit of life that is responsible for all of life’s processes
Mitosis
a process of cell duplication, in which one cell divides into two genetically identical daughter cells.
Homeostasis
self-regulating process by which an organism tends to maintain stability while adjusting to conditions that are best for its survival
Trait
a distinguishing quality or characteristic, typically one belonging to a person.
Osmosis
a process by which the molecules of a solvent pass from a solution of low concentration to a solution of high concentration through a semi-permeable membrane
