Science Flashcards
Define: Species
The population of a certain type of plant or animal
Define: Evolution
The process by which populations accumulate inherited changes over time
Define: Fossil
The solidified remains or imprints of a once living organism
Define: Plate Tectonics
Forces that drive movement of pieces of the Earth’s crust
Define: Vestigial Structure
Remnants of once useful structures
List two examples of a vestigial structure in the human body
Appendix
Tail Bone
Define: Trait
A characteristic
Define: Selective Breeding
When humans select the traits that move on to the next generation
Define: Natural Selection
The organisms with the favorable trait(s) have a higher rate of surviving
List the four steps of natural selection in order
Overproduction
Genetic variation
Struggle to survive
Successful reproduction
What is overproduction in natural selection
When an animal has a large amount of offspring knowing some won’t survive
What is genetic variation in natural selection
Each offspring is unique no of them are identical to each other or the parents
What is struggle to survive in natural selection
Struggle to survive is where the strong and the most adapted to the environment survive to adulthood while the others die due to predators, diseases, famine/lack of food ect.
What is successfully reproduce in natural selection
The strong and most adapted survive and have offsprings starting natural selection over and passing the favorable traits on to their offsprings
Define: Adapations
A characteristic that helps an organism survive to adulthood and reproduce
