Science Flashcards
How can you find out which materials contain carbonates?
Carbon dioxide is formed when an acid is added to a carbonate as it is a gas, you can see it as it fizz’s.
What is the percentage of gases in the air?
Nitrogen -
Oxygen -
Argon -
Other -
Nitrogen - 78%
Oxygen - 21 %
Argon - 0.65%
Other - 0.35%
What three things do you need to make fire / combustion?
Oxygen, heat, fuel
When is monoxide produced from fuels rather than carbon dioxide? Why does it kill people?
When there fuel does not have enough oxygen and the methane cannot burn the flame turns yellow. Some of the carbon combines with oxygen to form carbon monoxide.
It has no smell & you can’t see it.
What free factors make an explosion?
Large amount of gas
A lot of heat
Plenty of oxygen is available
What is a good conductor of electric?
Metals
Poor conductors of electric?
Wood & plastics
What do you use to measure electric current?
Ammeter
Two things you need to make something work using electricity?
Something to make electricity flow e.g. Cell
A complete circuit for the electricity to flow around
What does a fuse do?
It is designed to melt if the current gets to big
Eggs cells are released from?
Ovary
A baby develops in the?
Uterus
Sperm cells are made in the
Testis
A woman release an egg every?
Every 28 days for around 35 years
A baby is ready to be born ?
9 months
How long & how often is the menstruation cycle?
28 days last 3 to 7 days
If a woman misses a period what may have happened?
She is pregnant
Where will one end of a magnet point if it is free to turn?
North
Magnetic fields always go?
North to South
What is a electromagnet ?
A coil of wire with a current flowing through it
How can you make an electromagnet stronger?
More wire, using a higher current, using a core made from a more magnetic material
When does a coil of wire become a magnet?
When the switch is turned on
What taste do all acids have in common?
Sharp e.g. Orange, lemon
What is another name for vitamin C?
Ascorbic acid
Acid can corrosive true or false?
True
What does the rainbow chart measure?
PH scale to measure acids
What is a chemical reaction?
Colour change Gas produced Temperature change New substance Permanent or irreversible
