Science Flashcards
3 types of stress
Tension
Compression
Shearing
Stress
A force that acts on rock to change its shape or volume
Tension
The stress that pulls on the stretches rock so that it becomes thinner in the middle and occurs when two plates are moving apart
Compression
The stress that squeezes rock until it breaks or folds
Shearing
The stress that pushes a mass to opposite direction this can cause rock to break for slip apart
Fault
A break in the earths crust when mass slips pass each other
3 types of faults
Normal fault
Reverse fault
Strike slip faults
Hanging wall
Block of rock that lies above the fault
Foot wall
Block of rock that lies below the fault
Normal fault
Tension causes the Hanging wall slips down
Reverse fault
Compression causes the hanging wall move up
Syncline
Fold in rock that bends downward
Anticline
A fold in the crust that bends up like an arch
Fault block mountains
Two normal faults up lift a block of rock by using the stress of tension hanging wall move downward
