Science 3 Flashcards
The region between the cell membrane and the nucleus composed of a clear, jelly-like fluid that supports the cells organelles
Cytoplasm
The basic unit of structure and function in a living organism
Cell
Passageways that carry proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to another
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Small, round structures containing chemicals that break down certain materials of the cell (the “cleanup crew” of the cell)
Lysosomes
Tiny structure within a cell that carry out specific functions within the cell
Organelles
Receive proteins and other newly formed materials from the endoplasmic reticulum, package them, and distribute them to other parts of the cell
Golgi Bodies
Known as the “powerhouses” of the cell. They convert energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use to carry out its functions
Mitochondria
Thin layer that controls what substances come into and out of the cell
Cell Membrane
A thin membrane that surrounds the nucleus that allows materials to pass in and out through pores
Nuclear Envelope
An explanation that states that all living things are composed of cells, that cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things, and that all cells are produced from other cells
Cell Theory
The control center of the cell, directing all of the cells activities
Nucleus
Cells that DO have a nucleus (ex. Plant and Animal Cells)
Eukaryotic Cells
Cells that DO NOT have a nucleus (ex. Bacteria Cells)
Prokaryotic Cells
A sac inside the cell that acts as a storage area
Vacuole
Capture energy from sunlight and use it to produce food for the plant cell
Chloroplasts
