science<3 Flashcards
Explain what a physical change is.
A physical change is when (for example) you cut paper, it changes its shape, but it doesn’t give you anything new and can be reversed.
Is a change of state/matter a chemical or physical change?
It is a physical change, some examples are evaporation, boiling water, cutting paper, and breaking a pencil.
What is melting?
Melting is where a solid turns into a liquid. A good example of this is where if you leave ice out for too long, it turns into a liquid, but it can be easily reversed.
What is evaporation?
Evaporation is where liquid turns into a gas. A good example of this is when it rains and it leaves a puddle on the ground, and a few days later it is gone. This is because it has evaporated into a gas, but the gas is still water, so you don’t get anything new out of this, and is turned back into a liquid when it rains again.
What is condensation?
Condensation is where gas turns into a liquid. A good example of this is when it rains, and it leaves a puddle, the puddle will eventually evaporate into a cloud and will eventually condense into rain.
What is solidification?
Solidification is where a liquid turns into a solid. A good example is where if you freeze water, it turns into ice (solid).
Is a change of shape a chemical or physical change?
It is a physical change, some examples of this are moulding clay, slime, blu-tack, playdoh, and Oobleck.
Is a change of shape a physical or chemical change?
It is a physical change, some examples are breaking a twig or cutting paper.
What is a chemical change?
A chemical change is where new substances are made, and cannot be reversed. An example is burning a candle.
