Science Flashcards
Cold front
Forms at the surface of earth when a cold dry air mass overtakes a warmer humid air mass
Barometer
An instrument that measures the amount of atmospheric pressure
Condensation
The change from gas phase to liquid phase
Convection
The transfer of heat from one place to another when matter is in a direct contact and is in motion due to density changes in liquid of gas
Corilis effect
The apparent deflection of moving air as seen by the observer on earth apperent deflection is a result of earths rotation
Plate tectonic theory
Theory that the lithosphere is divided into tectonic plates that slowly move on top of the asthenosphere
Lithosphere
Cool rigid outermost layer of the earth that is divided into enormous pieces called tectonic plates consists of the crust and the ridged uppermost part of the mantle
Continental drift
The theory continents were once connected but have drifted apart
Fossil evidence
Impressions of organisms left in rock layers that indicate the organisms once lived in the area
Sea floor spreading evidence
A parallel pattern of the rock material found at identical locations on each side of the mid Atlantic ridge reveals rock of the same geological age and polarity
Divergent boundary
The boundary between two tectonic plates moving away for each other on land crests rift valleys on the sea floor crests new ocean crusts
Convergent boundary with subduction boundary
The boundary between two tectonic plates moving towards each other resulting in volcanic activity when denser ocean plates subduction below continental plate
Subduction
A plate is forced below when one plate is denser than another as they converge occurs at continental to oceanic boundaries and oceanic
Convergent boundary with the mountain buliding
A major geological event occurs when continental plates of equal density converge
Transform boundary
The boundary between two plates that slide pass one another sudden shifts result in major geological events such as earthquakes and the release of stored energy
