Science Flashcards
Troposphere
The lowest layer where all weather occurs. Temperature decreases with altitude
Stratosphere-
Contains the ozone layer. Temperature increases with
altitude.
Radiation-
The transfer of energy through space by visible light.
Conduction-
The transfer of energy that occurs when molecules collide.
Convection-
The transfer of energy by the flow of a heated substance.
Relative humidity-
The ratio of the amount of water vapor present in a volume
of air to how much water vapor that volume of air is capable of holding.
Important gases in the atmosphere in order of abundance:
- Nitrogen (N2)
- Oxygen (O2)
- H2O
- CO2
Water cycle
Evaporation- A change of state from a liquid to a gas.
Condensation- A change of state from a gas to a liquid.
Precipitation- All forms of water that fall from the sky.
Cloud formation:
Warm, moist air rises, cools and condenses.
Water droplets coalesce around condensation nuclei.
Precipitation occurs.
What does cold air do the tempature, density, pressure, and humity
Temperature ↓
Pressure ↑
Density ↑
Humidity ↓
What does warm air do the tempature, density, pressure, and humity
Temperature ↑

Humidity ↑
Types of precipitation:
Rain- Coalesced water droplets.
Sleet- Partially frozen rain droplets.
Hail- Forms from repeated freezing and melting.
Snow- Crystallized rain drops.
