Science Flashcards
What is a Greenfield site?
A Greenfield site is undeveloped land, usually in a rural or suburban area, that has not been previously built on.
What is a Brownfield site?
A Brownfield site is land previously used for industrial or commercial purposes that may be contaminated but has potential for redevelopment.
What is the primary goal of a feasibility study for a Brownfield site?
To determine the viability of redeveloping the site considering environmental, legal, and economic factors.
What is a feasibility study
A detailed analysis that considers all of the critical aspects of a proposed
project in order to determine the likelihood
of it succeeding.
What is thermal bridging?
Thermal bridging is the phenomenon where heat flows through an object or building component that has a significantly higher thermal conductivity than the surrounding materials.
Which of the following materials is most likely to create a thermal bridge? A) Wood B) Insulation C) Steel D) Foam
C) Steel
What are two common methods to reduce thermal bridging in construction?
- Using thermal breaks; 2. Improving insulation around thermal bridge areas.
How to work out an r value (thermal resistance)
Thermal resistance = Thickness/k value
How to work out a U value
U value = 1 / total sum of R values
What are different types of insulation
SIPs- structurally insulated panels are pre made panels made with an insulated material sandwiched together by two structural facings
Fibre glass sheets - these are sheets that are laid down in walls to insulate a building
Sprayed foam - insulated foam sprayed on walls for insulation
What does ‘carbon net zero’ mean?
It means balancing the amount of carbon emitted with the amount removed from the atmosphere, resulting in no net increase in carbon emissions.
What is onsite energy production
Through generating electricity on-site through renewable sources like solar panels or wind turbines
