Science Flashcards
Reproduction involving only one oganism
Asexual reproduction
Reproduction in which 2 individuals contribute one set of chromosomes each (n), and the offspring are a combination of each parents single set of chromosomes and is now diploid
sexual reproduction
One set of chromosomes
Haploid cells (n)
Two sets of chromosomes, one set from the mother the other set from the father Somatic cells- diploid cells of the body, not including reproductive
cells
Diploid cells (2n)
gametes; reproductive cells; haploid cells
Sex cells
A haploid sex cell; examples are unfertilized egg, or
sperm
Gamete
diploid cells of the body, not including reproductive
cells.
body cells
cells that are the result of mitosis or meiosis
daughter cells
A female gamete, contains a haploid number of
chromosomes
egg
A male gamete, contains a haploid number of
chromosomes
sperm
genetic material that codes for the production of proteins;
codes for the traits organisms have Chromosomes- DNA wrapped around proteins
DNA
chromosomes that have replicated and are paired up by
size and shape. Male with female and are connected
Tetrad
when DNA makes an exact copy of itself
Replication
the division of a eukaryotic cell’s nucleus into two
identical daughter cells
Mitosis
Process in which a diploid cell divides and produces
4 haploid cells (gametes)
Meiosis
