Science Flashcards
Convergent plate boundary
is when the two plates come together
Who is Alfred Wegner
he is a scientist who discovered the theory of plate tectonics and pangea
Divergent plate boundary
is when the two plates pull apart
suspension is a type of mixture that contains
big chunks that are suspended in a liquid
a colloid is a type of mixture that contains
2 substances mixed to the point where they cannot be separated and are not always easy to observe
solution is a type of mixture
of molecules that are perfectly mixed together, human eye cannot see individual molecules
an element is made up of
one kind of atom
A substance is the same as a compound and contains
two or more different elements, chemically bonded together. eg. NaCl
a mixture is when
two or more substances are combined but each substance keeps it physical properties
the solute is
the substance being dissolved
the solvent is
the substance its dissolving into
the solution is
a mixture of the solute and solvent
saturated is when
you reach a point that no mor will dissolve
insoluble is when
the solute is added to something it doesn’t dissolve into
the filter is
the material being used
the filtrate is
the substance moving through the filter
Residue is the
substance left behind in the filter
filtration is
the process.
what is chromatography
it is the seperation of a solute from a solvent, to create a chromatogram.
what does a chromatogram show
it show the more soluble solvent further up the paper anf the less soluble closer to the baseline
what is a chemical change
a chemical change is a process by which two or more substances may be transformed into one or more new substances.
what is a physical change
a physical change involves a change in states of matter, texture, shape, size, volume, mass, weight or density
distillation is where
one part of the mixture is evaporated to be condensed elsewhere
an endothermic reaction is when
heat is being taken in from surroundings for example photosynthesis and ice melting
an exothermic reaction is when
heat is released into the surroundings for example freezing and combustion in an engine
what is energy
energy is the ability to do work and it is found in many different forms
what is potential energy
energy that is stores for later use
what is kinetic energy
the energy of a moving object
what is the conservation of energy
energy can not be created or destroyed it can only be changed from one form to another
Filtration definition
seperates two parts of a mixture by pouring the solution through a type of sieve.
Decanting
A liquid is poured off after a sediment has formed at the bottom of the container. seperating sand and water
Crystallisation
A solution is heated to leave a solid dissolved in a solvent behind as crystals. blue crystals
Distillation
A mixture of two liquids which have different boiling points is heated. One part evaporates to be condensed somewhere else. Separating salt from salt water
Centrifuging
A mixture is spun so that the heavier particles move further to the outside than the lighter particles.
Separating funnel
Two liquids that do not mix are poured through a funnel with a tap.
Chromatography
seperating the solute from the solvent through a chromatogram
