Science Flashcards
Specialized cells
Specialized cells are different types of cells that have adapted to perform specific functions within the body.
Muscle Cells
They contract which causes bones to move
Red Blood Cells
Carries oxygen to the blood
Skin Cells
Forms a protective barrier and reduces water loss
White Blood Cells
Surrounds and swallows up harmful bacteria to battle infections.
Nerve Cells
Long, Thin and have many branches
Conduct electricity to coordinate body activity
Sperm Cells
Can move independently
Carry DNA from male parents to join with DNA of a female parent.
Egg Cells
Carry DNA from the female parent
Very large so they can divide multiple times
Photophores
Light producing spots on marine animals
Xylem Cells
Move water and minerals through plants
Phloem Cells
Moves sugar through the plants
Ground Tissue Cells
Storage of starch and energy for the plant.
Epidermal Cells
Protect the plant and simplify water absorption from roots.
Photosynthetic Cells
Contain chloroplasts which collect energy from the sun to make sugar for the plant.
Guard Cells
Control water loss from the leaves of plants.
