Science Flashcards
matter
anything that takes up space
Mass
a measure of the amount of matter in an object
Weight
measure of gravitational force on an objects
Volume
An amount of space an object takes up
density
The ratio of the mass of a substance in its volume
Atom
the smallest unit of an element
Element
a pure substance that is made from a single type of atom
periodic table
an arrangement of all known elements in order of atomic number
Pure substance
a material that cannot be physically separated into its parts
Molecule
a group of atoms
Chemical bonds
attractive force that holds atoms together
Compounds
a pure substance made up of 2 or more different types of atoms joined by chemical bonds
Crystal
Substance in which atoms are arranged in an orderly geometric repeating pattern
Substrict
- a number below and to the right of the symbol shows how many atoms of that element there are. If no subscript, one atom of the element is present (small#)
Coefficient
a number place in front of a chemical formula to show how many molecules of the substance are represented (big #)
Atomic Number
is related to the structure of the atoms each element has a unique atomic number
Atomic symbol –
every element is represented by a symbol of 1.2 or 3 letters
Atomic Name
Name of element from a person, place or when discovered
Atomic Mass
The mass is related to the mass of its atom
