Science Flashcards
Independent Variable
the variable that is purposely changed by the experimenter (I-change)
Levels of the Independent Variable
the levels of changes that are made to the IV
(ex. different types of water)
Dependent Variable (DV)
the variable that may change in response to the changes in the IV, the variable gets measured or observed (ex. plant growth)
Title
written with the words capitalized as
“The Effect of the (Fill in the IV) on the (Fill in the DV)
Hypothesis
a prediction about the outcome of the experiment; it states the relationship between the independent variable and the dependent variable, written as an “If…, then…” statement. (educated guess)
Constants
all factors that remain the same in an experiment
Control
the one IV level in an experiment where the independent variable is not applied and no IV is given to this group (not all experiments have a control) (Standard for comparison)
Repeated trials
the number of experimental repetitions, objects, or organisms tested at each level of the independent variable
Data table
a table that contains the results in your experiment. It contains the levels of the IV, # of repeated trials, results for the DV, and the mathematical average/computation of the results
Experimental Error
potential sources of error should be identified in an experiment
Constants not controlled
Small sample size
Not doing repeated trials
